New Deal

New Deal is said by the Jobcentre to be “a programme that gives people on benefits the help and support they need to look for work, including training and preparing for work“. There are several different variants as described below.

New Deal for Young People (NDYP)

What is New Deal for Young People?

New Deal for Young People (NDYP) aims to help you find and secure sustainable employment (of atleast 3 months) or to become self-employed. It is intended to help you improve the skills you already have and learn new additional skills. While you are on New Deal for Young People (NDYP) you should get help and support from a New Deal Personal Adviser (NDPA) who will be automatically assigned to you.

There are numerous “options” of provision which includes Voluntary Sector Option (VSO) which is slave labour exploitation of working for your benefits or 30 hour jobsearch, Enviromental Task Force (ETF) which is Community Service under a different name and then there are other options including Self-employment.

Your New Deal Personal Adviser wont ask or consult you of what option you would like to take neither would any suggestions you give be guaranteed to be an option you will be put on. Typically, a New Deal Personal Adviser will automatically assign you on to an option such as VSO (see Dencora House Detention Centre) and hand you a Jobseeker Direction to which you would have to comply with to avoid up to a 6 month sanction for non-compliance.

Those on New Deal for Young People (NDYP) may take advantage of a “taster session” before signing up on the programme option and can have as many “ref2″ referral appointments as they require.  This however is not verbally advised to the jobseeker (“customer”) nor is it contained in any guidance booklets, therefore, it is rare for any jobseeker to take on such an offer.

The Jobcentre Plus website describe it slightly differently:

New Deal for young people will help you find and keep a job or start work for yourself. It will help you improve the skills you have and learn new skills. While you are on New Deal for young people you will get help and support from your personal adviser. They will help you look at what you can do, and to build on the skills you have.

If you are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, and you are aged 18 to 24, you must take part on New Deal for young people to carry on getting some of your benefits unless you have a good reason for not taking part.

Is New Deal for Young People for me?

If you are aged between 18 to 24 and have been claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for 6 months or more, you must take part in New Deal for young people.

If both you and your personal adviser decide that it is best, you may even be able to join if you have been claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for less than 6 months.

Unemployment

This page was initially a page for comments on unemployment (as displayed below). This has now changed to be a page on New Deal, however, you may still post comments regarding unemployment.

This is a page where you the site viewer can comment specifically on the following issues (some of which may not be relevant to any other posts on here but relevant to unemployment):

  • being unemployed (general life, what its like to be unemployed for those who aren’t, how others treat you)
  • experiences at the Jobcentre (good experiences, mistreatment, DWP fraud etc.)
  • employed persons opinion on the unemployed and Jobcentre Plus (reading this site do you change your opinion on the jobless?)
  • political debates on the future of welfare
  • comments by employees of Jobcentre Plus/DWP or training providers (we want a fair balance of experiences) etc.

It even got the attention of the main paper in the north east and they did a story on it. If youd like i can email you the story and you can upload this on your website.

Yeah, the problem is you need to tell your New Deal Personal Adviser (NDPA) if you want to do the music course or self-employment course.

The problem is, and I am in the same situation, I never knew about them and my NDPA never asked me (although my CV stated I would be interested because of previous training I have done) – it wasn’t until i was exited from the VSO default option where I realised the other courses of New Deal even ones for Lone Parents, Disabled People and Graduates all of which are not applicable to me anyway.

You are also allowed to change New Deal options at anytime. Well, I tried that but my Jobcentre Plus office refused to transfer me although I made sure places to that course were available. Something to do with double funding or some nonsense.

knowing someone who inquired into new deal for musicians only to be told it wasn’t available in the area.

also new deal for disabled people is or was only available on incapacity benefit, and is only voluntary you would find people with health associated problems not “leaned” on as compulsory new deal.they (those with health problems) tend to find it easier in that direction on compulsory new deal also, but they are on that as a last resort.the dwp are careful not to be seen to aggravate any existing medical conditions.

as for changing options on new deal that tends to get ignored by the provider/jobcentre they seem to see a “leave them where they are” approach more appropriate even though you don’t feel its in your interest.it will be interesting if “flexible” new deal will be that flexible enough to handle these situations .

Well, I wouldn’t bet any money on it.

I don’t see what is so flexible about it. New Deal providers always had the option of choosing provision. For VSO it was either any work placement will do or 30 hours job search (although unrelated activities such as paper towers/bridges building, stupid childish word games or activities and walks comes under this definition.)

Some clients were sent home early continously either timesheets stating they stayed all the time when they didnt or reporting external jobsearch.

Basically, forget the jobcentre advertised booklets etc. all New Deal Providers have to do is give all participants a day of jobsearch per week. This could either happen or the staff could lie signing timesheets to say it was done when it wasn’t.

There was no upper ceiling to this rule thus many people were forced to do 30 hours every week. Fulltime job of doing jobsearch – how ironic!

Although many people complained as they had done the minimum weekly requirement of one day the provider was well within their rights of making people do 5 days as nothing said this wasn’t allowed.
