New Deal is bad for your health!
From Indymedia article:
Welcome to CDG detention camp
I bumped into a friend who I had not seen for a while. A lovely bubbly girl, full of life, or at least she was the last time I saw her. She had changed – drawn, hagged, dulled spirit, a pale shadow of her former self. What had happened to her I thought. She told me her story.
Like many unfortunates who find themselves without work, she found herself on New Deal and forced to attend a CDG (Careers Development Group) detention camp. There she said bullying was widespread, constant threats and intimidation from the staff, treated like shit, lack of facilities, no papers, in terms of job search she said she was worse off attending, false allegations were made against inmates to throw them off the course.
If this was not bad enough, she was forced to go and work for a company for no pay, with no job at the end. She said she was not the only one, a long stream of people were being sent to work for no pay, for which CDG was being paid. The company was not near where she lived, in another town, and very difficult to get to by public transport and one day when she had no money for fares, she was forced to walk home at night. Her experience at CDG drove her to the point of suicide and has seriously damaged her health.
Since her sentence at CDG she has had nothing but problems from the Job Centre. Her benefits have been repeatedly stopped for no good grounds, that she knows that her money has stopped, is when it literally stops. A nightmare and more stress to sort out the problems. The Job Centre is trying to force her into work for which she is totally unsuitable. Here previous experience was working in a bank for 22 years.
One day, when she had no money, a very nasty individual from the Job Centre who takes great delight in bastardising the unemployed offered to visit her at her home Friday night or over the weekend!
She is now suffering poor health. Two consultant have said she is not fit for work. But as she put it: ‘two consultants say I am not well, but a clerk at the job centre knows better.’
Her story is unfortunately not unique. She named names at the Job Centre, names that I have now had repeated to me by several other people.

I personally think the CDG (Careers Development Group) is a clever play on the GDC in reverse, standing for the Government’s Detention Camp.
I am also aware of someone suffering poor health at Dencora House detention centre who had to be signed off by the doctor. So its a larger problem nationwide.

anyone who has been on new deal in the past even several years ago seems to recall still perfectly the effects on them.
if there are health problems these have to be declared but its no excuse for treating people like this for simply being unemployed.it makes the chances of finding employment more difficult because health problems need to be declared to an employer.
those effected need to get their gp involved as this can take a serious toll on peoples health, make sure you explain clearly to the gp the precise problem and the trigger.providers are not keen on people with mental health problems’ on their premises, which isnt surprising given the treatment thats handed out, this raises disability claims which cannot be ignored.
an appointment with the job centre disability employment officer should be considered.the amendment of the jobseekers agreement will also be necessary to reflect any illness.

ryan i suppose you are in full employment then and have never had the experience of being unemployed or claimed benefits
i was unemployed for a number of years i didnt like being unemployed and dreaded having to face the jobcentre every fortnight just to claim the pittance that the goverment state we can live on for a fortnight its degrading as is having to do new deal which i did twice incidentally but thenkfully avoided a third term by signing off because by the end of the iap my state of health was taking a tolling due to the idiot ndpa
i signed off and managed to get a part time job 20 hours a week min wage through my own efforts and i was paid £107 A WEEK WHICH THE JOBCENTRE WAS PAYING ME A FORTNIGHT
i hope you have a spell of unemployment just to get a dose of what us unemployed have to go through and no the majority of us dont sit at home watching tv all day the majority are trying to find suitable employment!

re your comments about new deal 1st nov 2009
I thoroughly agree, about to be put on new deal for the 2nd time after completing the lst one in february this year, followed by 13 weeks job searching. what a waste of time! I am still unemployed, am 59 years of age and can take my pension next year, yipee! I thought you only had to take part after you were unemployed for 18mths. What a con as when you take part in the scheme you are signed off and receive your P45 so if you don’t secure employment you need to re-claim job seekers allowance ,so why do I have to re-join the scheme again so soon! These matters need to be addressed don’t you agree?

The ironic thing about New Deal was (and Flexible New Deal still is) although VSO/IAP were “employment course(s)” and that you had to undertake a days jobsearch under the provision… when you are on New Deal the Jobseekers Allowance requirements such as Actively Seeking Employment (ASE) and Availability for Work is relaxed.

that having to sign off is nothing but a complete con,the attitude i had at the call centre when reapplying was “do you want a job”,they brought up this “scheme” they shouldn’t blame people if doesn’t work by being rude.
also the council tax benefit stops also and threatening letters start to arrive with threats of fines for not disclosing that the claim was closed, they dont seem to know it was new deal and i wasnt employed, even though the jobcentre refers to it as a period of employment.
it was classed as “one” at the time meaning a one stop for claiming benefits, however this wasn’t the case even though this “one” had a stand in the council tax office” also.you were dealing with different departments that did not communicate hence this “all in one claim” was completely false.
my particular case resulted in a benefit error at the dss and resulted in numerous council office visits as the council weren’t happy with the information and the error indicated i was in contribution based, nothing said the dss,the council didnt see it that way none of this was my fault, the stress built up and up as a result.

cdg sound like a right bunch of bar stewards forcing unemployed into jobs for which the unemployed dont get paid but cdg are raking it in ie money for old rope thats another thing about these companies they also force the unemployed to apply for jobs where public transport is very scant and if you miss a bus home and have to walk you are putting your personal safety at risk especially in todays society but these pratts dont think about this mention the fact you are concerned about personal safety if you miss the bus and have to walk home and most likely the pratts will send you to see a psychologist!

I have accepted ryan’s and Marie’s comments (both from same IP address – different picture due to different names and email addresses) not to create an argument but for freedom of expression.
Some harsh words and is against the general movement of the site, however, not spam or excessively abusive. The comments are relatively defamatory however not specified at a singular named person or group of named people.

everyone of course is entitled to there opinion, however the site is related to the problems encountered by those on benefits/the new deal/job centre plus.
however those on benefits have contributed in the past and issues have to seen in a wider context, thus the realities faced by those on benefits such as job seekers allowance and the injustices that frequently occur to those who claim it.
given the climate of the last twenty nine years many of those that would have been employed in former industries have found it impossible to find work, hence the substantial numbers of young people who are unemployed as a result of the turn in economic policies, attemps are being maid to “patch” this by six month placements, however this isnt the answer.
if someone has health problems there are huge barriers to be faced, employers are not keen on people who might need time off, other employees having to cover for, someone with mental health problems might not feel able to cope in a demanding environment, simply saying health problems nonsense isnt a reality.its once said if you’ve got your health you’ve got your wealth.

i have read all the comments above and would just like to say that i have been on these new deal courses over the years i am now in employment, however i found these courses to be a waste of time never mind the money that the government is spending on them most people whilst there just stared out of the window and was only there because benefits would be stopped if they didnt go it never helped me find a job and thousands of others havent found a job through it neither these courses are simply a drain on the economy and without them there would be more money for the important things and maybe without them our taxes would fall as 90% of people on them didnt want to be there so they didnt want to the work set by the course provider now when i was in uni i remmeber that if i didnt want to go to uni i didnt have to so because i wanted to i did my work and got what i was there for the incentive you have no money if you dont go is never gonna work . plus i do belive that we are suppost to be living in a democratic state the statement no attented no money does sound like a dictatorship to me no democratic but what do we know we are only the ones paying the taxes!

well it could be said if ryan and marie are claiming to be educated they should have more sense,it easy to sit back and ridicule, but as is often the case that when bad luck falls in their direction they want all the sympathy and are quick to demand more.

Those on New Deal Benefits deserve a big round of applause for many reasons. Here are some -
1. We who sign on contribute almost 100% of our benefits back in to the economy.
2. The big banks (who have recently started paying big bonuses again) have been bailed out by the ordinary public. They are working people who are leeches, parasites on the state.
3. The bills of the banksters are also paid for by those claiming benefits.
4. The amount of benefits received by claimants is less per hour than the average Polish or Ukrainian labourer on any UK building site.
5. The total amount spent on benefits is less than 4% of the total tax receipts of the UK government.
6. The actual cost of benefits to those who work is nil. Since, as said, the money paid out goes directly in to the economy and helps keep people employed.
7. The amount paid to claimants is tiny fraction of the amount paid to New Deal training organisations (plus, of course their shareholders).
8. The benefits paid to the longsuffering British person are smaller than most other European countries.
I could submit a few thousand other reasons but these will do for the time being. Oh, and by the way, the taxpayer keeps shelling out for the monarchy. Who, until recently, paid no tax at all. Not bad for one of the richest families in the entire world. Shall we get them a council house ? What a privelege that would be, especially since they don’t build them any more. (‘They’ prefer to pay rich landlords instead of building affordable housing).

Yeah, stick the Royal Family in council houses, that includes the Queen. I will take Buckingham Palace
Some good points mentioned there. All benefits go back in to the economy anyway.
It is similar to how I used to think when New Deal provider staff look down to you for claiming £45-£65 a week on benefits when they are paid around £250 a week – all (indirectly) paid by the Government.

I have been put on a “work trial” although I did not know this at first, the job interview went great and sounded really engaging and something that would not become a hole that I would gradually sink into over time thinking god I hate doing this.Anyway the JC woman phones up “you have the job, it’s a week trial period, you will get your JSA for the week” (which was strange because for 8 -9 hours, 45 hours total I was expecting a pretty rewarding wage not £50) turns out she offered me (without asking before hand) to do this he will work for free for a week. The job is total rubbish and nothing like what was explained in the interview.
I am like the ant of the company I work god dam hard never stopping, putting out nearly 1,000 items and packing them a day to clients I basically spent the whole day doing two tasks it is so mind numbing beyond belief. I suffer from anxiety, which is horrible in itself because I end up been so worked up I cannot eat, I get really cold, shake, feel sick. All of which is a daily occurrence yet I go an do these days work and come out of it feel recked mentally and physically.
If anything this little experience has pushed it further than I have felt yet. (imagine getting ready for work feeling sick, finding yourself having to breath heavy because you feel so light headed and your hands are shaking and finger tips feel like pins are in them, your whole body is just cold through out despite wearing both a jumper and a hoody inside for example)I will be canceling it as I found out can be done in the T&Q of this work trial system, I will then be getting some medication to help with my anxiety since I found I cannot go about normal stuff with self help and counseling. And resuming my quest to find that job which I will find joy in doing.
