We had recently reported that possibly A4e had pulled Benefit Busters Epidsode 2 from the TV repeat and On Demand services.
Last night there was concerns that maybe the Government was involved in pulling the show off the air and off the internet. The Studio Lambert Documentary Benefit Busters Episode 2 highlights a very small element of concern regarding 13 week New Deal VSO/IAP courses.
The three quarters of an hour documentary show (excluding adverts) consisting largely of interviews with staff members, A4e chair Emma and interviews with participants/clients at home etc., only showing a small glimpse of the 13 week course itself and within that time it was clearly realised that the courses were demotivating, overcrowded and the staff mistreating the participants.
It is clear the allegations/hearsay/rumours/statements etc. regarding A4e and New Deal courses are actually true.
A4e stuck a lot of effort in the documentary to prove that they were the best organisation for the Flexible New Deal contracts and to state to the Obama Administration that they should get billions of dollars to provide such shit services in America.
The problem is such allegations (as they were made to be believed to be) are true but not only with A4e these are echoed with all New Deal providers. The Government would have a large motive in pulling this programme off air and off the internet. Flexible New Deal is “New Deal 2.0″. This episode of less than 30 minutes footage of the New Deal course shows that after a decade the New Deal scheme clearly is a failure regardless of what attempts the Government tries to justify it and clearly shows that organisations such as A4e clearly don’t have the ability to run these courses properly.
Flexible New Deal will be longer than 13 weeks and more “flexible” for providers on what the courses deliver. If New Deal providers are struggling with New Deal then they stand no chance with Flexible New Deal.
A4e are still pending termination of their Flexible New Deal contracts after they have been awarded.
It is possible that both A4e and DWP are responsible for pulling the programme.

What have C4 said about this, have you contacted them?

I contacted them via the online form, but its just a fairly standard reply that does not in any way address the issue.
“Unfortunately, BENEFIT BUSTERS Series 1 Episode 2 is no longer available on
4oD.
4oD must acquire very specific rights for online viewing and in this case we
no longer hold the rights to show it online.
There are no scheduled planned repeats for episode 2, although, I can
confirm that episode 3 is scheduled to be shown on Channel 4 on 3rd Sept at
9pm. Please check your TV listings closer to the time.
We apologise for any inconvenience.”
Basically, the have not said WHY they dont have the rights any more, ie who withdrew the rights, NOR have they said why the repeat showing was cancelled.
Perhaps a freedom of information request from someone may get a better answer (if someone has the time to do one, please do so!)

Good idea but:
a) FoI Act requests only apply to the Government – Channel 4 are exempt
b) An FoI Act request (if answered) would state that they don’t hold the information (even if they are involved). Alternatively they might apply for exemption.

The request should be for “any documents (and telephone transcripts) received relating to why show was removed from the schedule and 4OD”.
A general request of “why is is it not on 4od” will result in the answer of “C4 do not have to justify there scheduling decisions under the FoI act”.

For a public broadcaster, Ch 4 has displayed shocking customer service by it’s unwillingless to to say why Episode 2 has been removed.
However,on a Facebook group; A4e The Truth. Someone has said a directive has come down the chain of command stating that agencies are no longer to be used!

its also a bit ominous that the reply said
“Please check your TV listings closer to the time.” as that to me indicates a possibility strong enough for them to mention that, that the third episode could be pulled. If there was no likely hood of it, why would they mention that?

The latest comment on the channel 4 benefit busters ep 2 page is from someone who says maybe someone should contact sky news about the programme disapearing and no reasons being given…
Thought that was a good idea so I did, It would be great if many more people could do the same thing, the more emails they get the more likely they are to not dismiss it.

Depair not., here’s the reason why Episode 2 was TEMPORARILY reomoved:
Channel 4 decided to remove this episode of BENEFIT BUSTERS because
subsequent to transmission a person contacted Channel 4 and asked for his
identity to be concealed in the programme. This person was incidental to the
programme, however, we will re-edit it so that they are not identifiable.
The removal has nothing to do with A4E. The new edit will be available as
soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Thanks Gerry but surely thats nonsense?
Why would they pull the repeat though? It is a very simple task for a professional to conceal an identity of a person. I would estimate this to be a 5 hour job maximum depending on the extent of such and the workload the professional has. It is not difficult at all and would have been sorted for the repeat.
It also raises my concerns of why did Channel 4 state they pulled the show as they didn’t have the rights? Like I said (may have been a different site) if someone asks for their identity to be concealed it doesn’t lose them the rights. Whats *really* going on? Anyone that knows the answer please comment.
